International Nutella Day-Leading company in Sustainable Palm oil

05/02/2020

It's International Nutella day! To mark this my blog today is all about palm oil...

According to the WWF, Nutella (a brand owned by Ferrero) is actually a LEADING name in sustainable palm oil! Well done Ferrero! They actively have investments in palm oil sustainability through conservation projects and protecting rainforests. The Nutella website explains that their palm oil is 100% certified segregated RSPO. In simple terms, their palm oil is kept separate from any conventional palm oil through the whole production and supply process. The director of WWF's Market transformation Initiative has praised this achievement.

Greenpeace has also praised Ferrero for their work considering them 'one of the first and more progressive companies in the world in the implementation of a relevant "No Deforestation" policy.' (https://www.nutella.com/us/en/nutella-palm-oil)

Palm oil is perhaps the most widely used oil meaning there is constantly a huge demand for it. The demand has caused a surge in deforestation in Indonesia and Malaysia. These two countries together account for around 85% of the world's palm oil production. Over 50,000 orangutans have died as a result of deforestation for palm oil. These orangutans often enter local villages where they are often caught and killed.

It is vital that we as the consumer, are aware of companies using unsustainable palm oil so as to prevent deforestation. Below is a list of the worst culprits, and a link to WWF’s scorecard for companies and their palm oil usage:

-Unilever
-Mars
-L’Oreal
 -Kelloggs
-Nestle
-Pepsico
